Headboard 2.0

When I got my own apartment after college my first and only must purchase was a ‘big girl’ bed, a bed bigger than a twin. And, with this big girl bed I wanted a nice headboard I could sit against comfortably and read a good book. (I loved my window headboard but it wasn’t practical for sitting in bed — although it works great as wall art!)

So what did I do, I made my own head board…because, that sounds fun right?! I enlisted my loving uncle —who happens to own his own construction company— and together we built my second headboard. First, I measured my new bed, twice (if you only want to cut once ;) ) before sifting through his scrap lumber pile.

We found a variety of scrap wood and 2X4’s that would work perfect. We cut and patched the scraps together to achieve the desired headboard size. Next, we screwed on the 2x4 legs which would be secured to the bed frame and hold the visible padded headboard in place. Lastly, I stretched and stapled a cheap mattress pad I purchased at a box store across the plywood front and topped it off with my chosen fabric.

This headboard has provided me great use over the years and currently resides in the guest bedroom on the platform bed I made. We are currently using Jeff’s bed frame in the master bedroom but I have plans to integrate a headboard into our navy blue feature wall — keep on the look out for an upcoming story regarding that design and build!
